In order to remain healthy, the body needs to maintain a normal pH balance of about 7 to 7.4. If you recall your chemistry lessons, a 7 on the pH scale indicates a neutral solution, with the higher end of the scale indicating a higher level of alkalinity and the lower end indicating a higher level of acidity.
If the body’s pH becomes too acidic, it can cause a lot of health problems. This is because our body is constantly striving to maintain a normal pH balance, but having excessive body acid makes it more difficult to achieve this balance and leads to minerals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium being taken from our vital organs to make up for the lack of alkaline in our system.
These mineral losses and metabolic abnormalities increase the risk of a number of conditions such as hormonal imbalance, chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, bladder and kidney conditions including kidney stones, weakened immunity, premature ageing, weight gain, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, joint and muscle pains due to lactic-acid build up, chronic fatigue, mood swings, and yeast or fungal overgrowth.
Long-term acidity is like rust: slowly but surely, it corrodes our body. Fortunately, there are ways in which we could aid our body in maintaining a balanced internal pH, from exercising to avoiding polluted areas and working on minimizing stress and negative emotions. But the most effective way for us to keep our pH balanced is through our daily food and drink intake.
One thing in particular that could boost our body’s alkaline levels and normalise our pH is through the water we drink. Since 70% of our body is made of H2O, increasing the pH level of our drinking water could prove very beneficial in helping our body find and keep healthy acidity levels.
